Company History

The United Shoe Machinery Company of Boston, USA was established in Australia in November 1899. The company sold Goodyear machines and McKay fastening machines to the Australian footwear industry. The Head Office was based in Clarence Street, Sydney with a second office in Bourke Street, Melbourne. In 1907, the Head Office was moved to Melbourne and established in Brunswick Street Fitzroy.

The British United Shoe Machinery Company was incorporated under that name in 1913. In 1927 the existing building was constructed and the company moved to Smith Street, Fitzroy.

Branches were opened in Brisbane in 1913, Wellington New Zealand in 1914 and in Adelaide in 1920. In 1931 approval was received for the construction of the Works building in Alexandra Parade, with production of shoe machinery, footwear nails and shanks commencing in the newly established works in 1932.

In 1935, the Sydney warehouse in Chippendale was erected and business transferred from the leased premises in Buckingham Street. During the years prior to World War II, the British United Shoe Machinery company supported an expanding footwear industry in Australia and was a prominent supplier of materials and a major lessor of machinery for footwear production. A substantial part of the Australian industry was at that time located in Collingwood / Fitzroy.

The second World War saw diversification of the company’s activities. With defence production requiring additional manufacturing space a further floor was added tot works building and land purchased in Mitcham.

In January 1955, the British United Shoe Machinery Company of New Zealand was incorporated and Tucker Industries Pty Ltd was formed from the George Tucker Eyelet Co. of Australia previously operating as a division of The British United Shoe Machinery Company.
